We are guided by the criterion that no animal should suffer when it is slaughtered. In general every food is considered halal unless it is specially prohibited by the Qur\u2019an or the Hadith. In reference to food, it is the Islamic dietary standard, as prescribed in the Shari\u2019ah (Islamic Law).<\/p><\/li><li><p>HARAM: This is another Arabic term which means impermissible or unlawful in Islam.<\/p><\/li><li><p>Rasulullah (sallallahu alayhi wasallam) said:\u00a0<em>\u201cHalal is clear and the Haram (unlawful) is clear. Between the two there are doubtful matters concerning which people do not know. One who avoids them in order to safeguard his deen (religion) and his honour are safe, while if some one indulges in it, he may be indulging in the unlawful\u2026\u2026\u201d<\/em>\u00a0(Bukhari)<\/p><p>General Qur\u2019anic guidance dictates that all foods are Halal except those that are specifically mentioned as Haram (unlawful or prohibited). The Glorious Qur\u2019an reads:<\/p><p><strong><em>\u201cO ye who believes! Eat of the good things wherewith we have provided you, and render thanks to Allah, if it is He whom ye worship. This is an abomination\u2026.\u201d (Chapter V, Verse 3).<\/span><\/em><em style=\"color: var( --e-global-color-text ); font-family: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-family ), Sans-serif; font-weight: var( --e-global-typography-text-font-weight ); font-size: 1rem;\"><span style=\"font-weight: bolder;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/em><\/p><p>Consumption of alcohol and other intoxicants is prohibited according to the following guidance:<\/p><p><em><strong>\u201cO ye who believe! Intoxicants and games of chance, and idols and divining arrows are an abomination of Satan\u2019s handiwork. Leave it aside in order that ye may succeed.\u201d (Chapter V, Verse 9)<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p>Meat is the most strictly regulated of the food groups. It is abomination. Lo! The devils do inspire their friends to contend with you. But if ye obey them, ye will be in truth idolaters\u201d. (Chapter VI, Verse 121)<\/strong><\/em><\/p><p>Attempts have been made to explain or justify some of the prohibitions based on scientific reasoning as follows:<\/p><ul><li>Carrion and dead animals are unfit for human consumption because the decaying process leads to the formation of chemicals which are harmful to humans<\/li><li>Blood that is drained from the body contains harmful bacteria, products of metabolism, and toxins<\/li><li>Swine serves as a vector for pathogenic worms to enter the human body. Infections by Trchinella spiralis and taenia solium are not uncommon.
